Facilitating change to healthier lifestyles

How to most benefit from this site

We set up this site to provide you access to basic training in Behavioral Screening and Intervention (BSI) and the essential therapy tools needed to provide BSI. These include Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Problem Solving Treatment (PST).

MI is really the core. To best learn it, begin by reading the book listed in the Resource Section of the website. Then watch the MI training videos.

Watching the BSI videos will provide you with a more technical background to understand and explain what we're doing.  These videos are especially important to understanding the treatment of substance use, the associated pharmacology and thus when and how to best coordinate care with a medical professional when appropriate.

Problem Solving Treatment is an evidence-based modality for treating depression and other problems. It can work especially well when used with MI and your client is ready to take action steps.

CAVEAT: You cannot learn these skills by reading the book and watching the videos alone. First, it is recommended that you take notes and then make a brief outline of your notes when reading the book and watching the videos. This will help you to both learn and recall important components. Most importantly, you will gain these skills through practice.  You should schedule regular times with a supervisor who has indicated confidence in their own skills to train you well.
